Crayons and Travel Plans

Back in March I vaguely outlined my travel plans, since then a bit has changed. All going to plan with work September ‘08 will be the month I leave. I’ve created a map giving a general idea of the parts of the world I want to travel to and how much but I don’t have much more to go on. I’m adding in Eastern Australia, probably from Brisbane up to Cairns, I think that will get me into the swing of things and if my GF decides to come however far with me it will help that along a bit too.

So here is the map, I know it looks a bit like a kid has attacked it with a bunch of crayons but I never said I had L337 PhotoShop skillz. Please remember this is pretty rough and indicates where I would like to travel during my lifetime, not just for this trip. I’ve probably forgotten some places and accidentally coloured some areas that aren’t all that appealing but I think it still gives a good idea. Key? Red: is Must See, Orange: is Don’t Want to Miss, Green: is Will Try Get There Somehow and blue is just Island areas I’d like to see, although they are not prioritised.

I’m looking at having 10 - $15,000AUD for a minimum 6 months, I think it’s pretty safe to say you could potentially travel for a lot longer than six months on that. Who knows what the AUS Dollar will do between now and then, I’ve only been following it against the USD and if the trend continues there I might be looking even better. More maps to come soon with possible routes although I don’t won’t to over plan so they will be pretty general too.

If you haven’t been following Dave he is getting really close to his departure and because I’ve been following him since I started this blog I’m getting excited for him too. He has some info over there that is really useful and I’ve just found how I can use some of his planning details to help with my own, especially now dollar conversions are much easier for me.

  1. What an awesome way to relate your travel plans - and a great one to get it clear in your own mind, too!
…Better than a stinky old list, that’s for sure.
Well, I’ve been converted - crayons are definitely the way ahead! Thanks for sharing your plans, Dan, someone as nosy as me always finds that kind of stuff interesting!

  2. I like the colored map - you’re looking as ambitious as me. I can’t believe I’m set to travel when the USD is near it’s historical lows against other currencies - what are the odds!

  3. Hi Dan, great blog. If your planning to visit the UK, please don’t just visit London! Recommended visits are to the Lake District, very much like Tasmania, very scenic.

Also, a trip to York, Edinburgh, Bath, Oxford, and Cornwall are also recommended.

I’m just writing a blog post reviewing 10 blogs I haven’t visited before, and will be featuring yours.

  4. Thanks guys, Darren I’ll definitely take your advice on my blog and there are plenty of places outside London I want to visit in the UK. Walking Hadrian’s wall is something I would like to do, bit more realistic than the great wall, lol.

  5. This looks too ambitious to mee! I don’t understand why you want to see the whole of the north american west coast (What do you want to do on the north coast of Alaska??) but leave the east coast green. In Africa you’re only interested in the touristy bits, and south africa is not like africa at all! Have a good trip anyway!

  6. T Goodin,

It’s definitely ambitious and I’ll never get to see it all but better to aim for the stars and all that. My main reason for wanting to visit the US is for it’s natural beauty, personally I find the west coast suits my tastes more than the east.

The north coast of Alaska. Ever heard of Alaska’s north slopes? It’s often described as a barren wasteland but mostly that talk comes from the oil companies who want to rape the area. NG did an excellent feature a while back http://www7.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0605/feature1/
a barren wasteland could not be further from the truth, a refuge would be far more apt.

And as for Africa, I’ve realised I actually left out a fairly large swathe of the South/South East I would like to visit. I’m not one for not visiting a place because people consider it “touristy”. In Africa I admit a lot of what I want to see and do is quite touristy but at the same time I don’t think my plans in anyway “cheapen” what the experience would be.

South Africa simple I want to go there not because I think it is like Africa but because it is like South Africa and the country interests me.

  7. Wow what a challenge, but I would imageing things don’t always go to plan. Some of the previous comments are correct when they say to visit places off the tourist map.
The UK has parts where Aussies and Amercians never visit and seem to home in into London or Scotland.

My point is that every country is probably the same, well known tourist areas, not really reflecting the rest of the country.

I saw this first hand with a trip to India and wen to areas, that tourists would never go.
    Good Luck
