Ok lets start with the bad stuff, Debt. I haven’t had a statement on my car loan in a while, I’m expecting one soon but until the I’ll just have to guesstimate from my budget spreadsheet and yahoo widget what it might be.

  • Car Loan: $2,386
  • Digital Camera: $870

So thats $3,256 left to pay off, I have just under $1000 in Savings and I’m paying $125 a week on the car and $25 on the camera, I’m not being charged interest on the camera so there is no great urgency to pay it off. I’ll go into the bank tonight or on the weekend and find out exactly what the balance on my car loan is, I think I will use that $1000 to shorten the loan term by 2 months. This fortnight I actually managed to pay off an extra $50 each week on both loans, I really should have put it all towards the car but I’ll remember to do that next time.

My Mobile phone died the other day and as it’s a work requirement I have to buy a new one so I’m trying to get something <$200 off ebay, there is one finishing in 1 hour hopefully I’ll get lucky, because I don’t use it personally i can claim it on tax anyway, still I was quite happy to keep using my 6 year old brick until it wasn’t required anymore.

All things going well I will have payed off the car loan in 2 months time, maybe slightly earlier with a good tax return then I can start putting away $350+ a fortnight.

[thumb:71:l]About a year ago I bought a large money tin\can\box whatever you like to call it, cost me about $3 from a shop called Chickenfeed that has a lot of useless cheap stuff like that. By now I normally would have cracked it open with a can opener and squandered the money on something even more useless but this time I have decided to challange myself to wait until it is full or it reaches 10 Kilos and then it will be counted and deposited into my travel savings fund. I like saving money this way because you can actually see it grow as more than just number on a screen or bank statement, only downside is security and the fact it doesn’t earn interest.

[thumb:70:l]So I’ve put it on the scales and it already weighs in at a hefty 7.2kg so only 2.8 kilos to go, I’ll weigh in on the 1st of each month and depending on if we fill it or reach the goal weight first I’ll hold a vote to keep going or not. At the very end I think I might come up with a prize and hold a competition where the person who guesses closest to how many $$$ were in the tin will win that prize.

What is it that distracts you?

I’ve been a bit distracted lately by a desire to buy a car I’m in love with, the [tag]Nissan[/tag] [tag]300zx[/tag]. after actually pursuing it a couple of times now I think I have finally convinced myself to forget about for now. I was planning on selling my current car which is a relaible and economical little thing for this sexy potential pain in the backside fuel guzzler. Buying one would set me back at least 6 months on my travel plans in exchange for driving a real car for once.

[thumb:60:l]I’ve been battling with this for a while and asking myself “what will I get more out of?” of course I think travel. I imagine buying this car would give me a lot of satisfaction but if I died soon after would I be happy with how I lived my life? No. Quite simply owning any car no matter how impressive doesn’t count in my eyes to as an indication of how well I have lived. I imagine although I would probably be satisfied with the car I would be driving it knowing it has delayed at least the one thing I wish to do that will truely satisfy me inside. On the other hand if I put travel first I will echieve at least part of something I have been dreaming about for a lot longer than this car. I know I will feel more fulfilment than any car can ever give me, oddly enough one of the biggest things that has convinced me to keep travel a priority can from where I was looking for the car, quite a few people are selling their pride and joy to travel, which really confirms that the value in travel is much more than the value I’d get out of the car, I may even find that after some travel I have absolutely no desire for these types of things, I think it can wait until after. So thankfully this distraction has subsided not half because OS travel is now potentially so close for me.

So the car can remain in my dreams for now and maybe taking the odd one for a spin when available will keep my wanting for performance in check. So until I’m commited to a flight I’ll just have to keep reminding myself that compared to what travel will give, there is no comparision.

Most of us who are serious about travelling know that it isn’t nearly as expensive as most people think or at least it doesn’t have to be, but thats not to say that it’s cheap, compared to your daily life at home it may be even cheaper but unless your going to [tag]work[/tag] while you travel then you need to have money sorted before you go.

The very first think you need to do is clear any [tag]debt[/tag] you have, I currently have over $4000 personally, thats a return ticket to South East Asia and easily two months there. About $1000 of that is insignificant because I am not and will not pay [tag]interest[/tag] on it and it is for something I would prefer not to travel without… my camera. The rest though I’m paying interest on and at the minimum monthly paments it will take me over a year to pay it off and probably a couple of extra hundred in interest. There is only one solution to this increase your payments. Since the start of this loan a good 3 years ago I have been paying more than the minimum monthly required by about $50 now I’m paying it off about $200 a month faster and it should be gone in about 6 months rather than 1+ year.

Once you have cleared that debt your in a good position, you already know you can live without the money you had been paying your debt off with so it should be no chore to continue with those payments equal or greater an put it into a [tag]savings[/tag] [tag]account[/tag] instead, you could have started paying into a savings account earlier but it is best to avoid the interest. This means that you maximise the money and time you have in savings earning interest instead of having a little money earning and your debt costing interest at most likely a much greater rate.

Other [tag]income[/tag] you may recieve like a [tag]tax[/tag] refund should go directly towards your debt or your savings, you don’t need it just yet, you’ve lived all year without that [tag]money[/tag] and you still can so eigther use it to stop the interest bleed or to earn it.

You need to [tag]budget[/tag] and you should calculate it based on how often you are payed, weekly, fortnightly or monthly. Include everything and for bills that don’t fall into the same timeframe you are paid calculate how much you will need to pay on your budget’s timeframe and use internet [tag]banking[/tag] and such so that all your bills are payed in full or in installments each budget cycle. This gives you a better idea of how much disposable income you actually have and how much you can afford to save. For a more accurate idea write down for a week or two everything you buy that isn’t an essential like electricity, I’m talking about lunches and fast food and non essential purchases. Can you cut back or find a cheaper alternative?

This is the most basic start you can make and as you can see really it’s just commonsense.

I found this site yesterday that has some basic information saving money for traveling, it even has a calculator to help you guage how much you need to save for a period of time in a certain destination, I think it over estimates by a bit though, depends on your travel style mostly. Also check out the blog on the site which will give you more information and ideas over time. Here’s the link SavingForTravel.
