A Better Blog?

I’ve been thinking of expanding and doing something new, I’ve been reading blogs such as Problogger, kentonwhitman, EcoGeek, The Thinking Blog, Get Rich Slowly, Change Your Thoughts, Lifehacker, Pick The Brain, Zen Habits, Web Design Book and Brave New Traveler for some time now.

It got me thinking about a super blog with the best bits from all these type of blogs. I know many of these blogs tell you to target a niche but I think this could work, why? The reason I’m subscribed to these is because they interest me and because most of them have been recommended by authors of the other blogs. The reality is a lot of like minded people read these blogs and wherever I go in this small selection someone is talking about one of the others. Is there a niche for people who read from these niches? I think from what I’m seeing there definitely is.

So what do you think.

Would you read something like that?

Do you think I should do it here or build a new blog?

  1. I would read something like that. I do like your blog here as it is, so for my mind I’d like to see a separate blog! 8)

  2. thanks for the mention in such good company! so regarding your idea, are you saying you’d just do a roundup of posts from these blogs? because if so, it may be easier to just create an RSS feed through something as easy as delicious - just bookmark the best bits and provide the subscription URL so others can get this “best of” feed.

  3. Definitely not a round up of their work, it would be original articles of similar topics, but not just following what everyone else is talking about.

  4. It’s a great idea, and similar to what I started with. The problem I encountered, and the reason I eventually defined a smaller niche for myself, is that it’s virtually impossible to be all things to all people.

People like to know exactly what they’re getting. The issue you’ll run into is that you’ll attract readers with one type of post and then throw them off when the next one is totally unrelated.

Also, the rewards are highest when you’re at the top of a well defined niche — you can find sponsors, network, market yourself, etc. much more easily.

Good luck if you decide you go for it. I’d be interested to see how it works out.

  5. If the quality was the same, I would read it. You pretty much provided a list of where I hang out. :-)

  6. Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I will head slightly in that direction but still try to link everything back to travel. So hopefully it will appear as a subtle change and develop from there.
